this may be sacri-religious but I do go off the tracks once in a while (surprise). Antigua needs a new image and the latest, as a ‘wedding destination’ doesn’t cut it..San Miguel Allende and Oaxaca have carved out their niches as either ‘art or writer’ colonies..of which, both we’re in painfully short supply.
ok..the curve ball: what group of people have the disposible income, time and taste for art?
the gay folks! Antigua needs a shot in the arm and who better than the ‘boys’?…INGUAT..get on this…slogans, ads…’don’t leave your friends behind’? a bit much perhaps, but.
now that I’ve moved, back to what were some older perimeters, I’m noticing changes. La Viniera Antigua used to be my southern edge, maybe even Panza Verde. As I walk I notice all the places I used to go, now gone. I’m seeing that the economic edge has shrunk, to perhaps 6th calle/6th avenidas…and that even being on 4th calle, eastweird, doesn’t guarantee success.
In a microcosm, the few ‘ex-pat’ bars reflect this…their pool of clients has grown smaller as they try to ‘cut the pie’ into other pieces. There’s not enough business to support what few there is/are and I can think of one or two who won’t survive much longer.
funny, how location/word of mouth can impact a business…what used to be the Black Cat hostel on 6th avenida, has re-morphed into ‘Bigfoot’ and is packin’ ’em in..
und zo, was that the first real rain of the season? Costa Rica, always on top of the game, calls it the ‘Green Season.’ gotta slogan in mind?
