describes the current city project of replacing the old water pipes with new PVC….5th and 6th Calle west are ripped up, and some of 5th calles trenches are being filled in…next? re-installing the cobble stones. This project is scheduled for a four month completion date, optimistic at best and with the processions starting in about four weeks and Semana Santa coming in the first week of April? do the math..it’s gonna be hellish. And to add to that circus, there’s uncertainty about who’s gonna pay for the PVC…the City, the Water Department? one would’ve thought that they might have nailed these things down, eh?
One of Antigua’s oldest disco/bars is having ‘payroll’ problems…employees getting shorted and also having to wait a month to get paid…not right, is it? they’re on 5th Ave, if that’s a clue.
Kind of like the problems with Caniz, our private mail service..saying now that they’re cutting back to one day a week service (outgoing)and other cuts…I have the email addresses if you want to gripe and complain (I already have)
many thanks to the Guatemala ExPats forum on Facebush, for their recent plugs for my silly little book, Our Man in Antigua…
and yes, after several weeks of dithering, I’m getting to know how to do video…first it was hardware then software…now’s it’s down to me to figure it all out, Alfie.
Und zo, it’s the weekend, end of the month and Stupor Bowl on Sunday…
I’ll probably wander down about half-time, somewhere yet to be decided but I’ve narrowed it down to two choices. Hell, I can’t even tell you who’s playing. Wait! the ‘underinflated balls’ mean the Patriots, right? my mind..it takes a licking and keeps on ticking..and seeing as it’s after 5, I think a libation is in order..fine! and don’t forget….www.amazon.com/author/michaelsherer for all the right reasons…an interesting look-back to this time last year…who would’ve thought that Alabama Bob and Mike D would be in the bar business? not me..

Antigua is chock-full of tourists! groups here, there and everywhere, even some Christians in their matching t-shirts/caps..so why do we have the Army squads walking around, mid-day, in the park and on the streets, fingers on the triggers of their M-16s? I don’t get their mission or the concept…this country already has a perceptual problem of violence and the boys in camouflage don’t detract from that.

Some long faces at a newer bar last night…a stack of unpaid bar tabs will do that. It’s one thing to want to be popular/easy going but the concept is making money, not old friends skating on your dime.

Sara’s back in town…aka Pinky and looking slinky, at La Taverna.
yeah….great talks with Ponzi Bob last night…said that his wife read the book and was glad to know that he hadn’t been screwing off all these years…’told him that now he’s famous, in his own time.

‘heard that the new Wendy’s, on the park, dammit, doesn’t have their permits…how could that be, given their obviously public location? ‘it’s Chinatown, Jake’ and the new trenches, along 5th calle? what kind of impact are those having on businesses up/down that busy street? not good, I suspect…and this is only the beginning, of 4 months of such, 4 being the quoted time to finish the job..
Segue-Way sticking their machines in other places now, trying to find customers…fuggedaboutit…even Freddy’s Scooters isn’t/hasn’t worked.

Frank’s Place, on the hill…well, the mountain, doing a steady stream of business, thanks to music, good food and the free shuttles…the great view doesn’t hurt either…and yes, Jerome is back, creating a sports bar in an under-utilized part of Reilly’s/La Esquina. Retirement wasn’t his thing.

I was thinking (sic) of some New Year’s Resolutions…not many, I’m afraid but here goes. Moderation in all things, except moderation. Avoid Negative people, not always easy in Antigua. Write/travel more (easier). Avoid impossible women and forgive and forget..
did I see that Cafe 2000/Dos Mil aka Reilly’s #2 was being gutted yesterday? is …..really going to buy into La Taverna? I’ve heard that there were overbids for the slice/piece of the partnership…in my estimation, a major error..
Marcel, long ago a partner of El Cazador Italiano, now showing up often at Michos..why? rumor has it that Neil was run out of Guatemala and now is in Florida…damn..
HBT, still on the river in Guaranja…not a pretty sight..
tomorrow? off to Hawaii and the Freedom Beach Hostel/Hotel for a night or so…write it up…and yes, the latest event to ChiChi…up on the Ex..go to my FB/Our Man page for a link…it was good, tiring and as usual, events I can’t/didn’t write about.
yep, http://www.amazon.com/author/michaelsherer or just the usual URL here..
and yes, more and more pizza outlets…that, and ice cream are the driving economic forces of this town, although Glenn Wilson of C-21 says that rentals and sales are ‘up.’….who knows? don’t buy the Seg Way outfit, if you’re curious…they’re trying…but..bad concept..

the punch line of a joke. A teacher tries to explain what ‘frugal’ means…i.e., to ‘save’…so she asks her class to use it in a sentence. One turns in a story about a knight saving a maiden, with that as the line. ok, fine..it’s a dumb joke but that’s my life, ok?
Spiros of the Exit Inn, celebrating his birthday (53)tonight…a round up of the unusual characters in attendence..
next door, Fusion is undergoing extensive remodeling and Alex is adding another restaurant in the fair back, featuring smokes meats…the name? “Something” as in he hasn’t thought up one..hmm..’Something’ might work.. I see that the Segue way people have stuck in a couple of their products in the front of Pal’Paladar…better location but still a losing concept for this town…scooter rentals haven’t made it, so how the hell can even foreign concept work? hey…offer free ice cream, is that’s what makes this town work. That, and pizza. Are the pizza places now outnumbering the same as travel agencies?
‘went by Da Vinci,to see Luis Miguels away fabulous Christmas tree..gonzo…damn..but the always fabulous Claudia #1 was in…whew..what a babe (and I told her so, ‘cuz it’s the truth)
Ponzi Bob and seldom seen wife due in late tonight..

and yes, the weekend looks like another run with Hogan and Reid…Chichi…always good for major crowds/chaos..hey, they picked it.
‘incineration’ the previous title…it happened last night, when i built a bigger than usual fire and draped two towels on the fire screen….whoosh! was reading, sipping but got the flamers out to the patio…singed a bit of my right hand but nothing serious.
and rumors of a change in one the partners of El Taverna..one selling, another buying in..
so, if there’s time, go to http://www.amazon.com/author/michaelsherer and whip on the book…it’s a classic Antigua story, that still goes on.

My landlord, a long-time Antigueño, tells me that he used to walk the dogs on the street by the finca, but ever since they enacted a law requiring insurance for dogs….you know, bites/attacks and such, that he’s quit…how much? 1000q a month…$120 or so….’so’, I asked, ‘who’s writing these policies?’ answer: “no one”……its just crazy enough, I figure, to be true.

I’ve been hearing good things abut Travel Menu’s Thursday Steak Nights….but nothing about the Sunday Roast Beef platter…anyone? looks like they’re going head-to-head/mano-a-mano with the ‘other mini-empire in town, with the pig roasts/bbq’s on Sunday….not a lot of love lost between these folks, btw..’mention one and you’ll get a scowl…congrats and so on to the “perfesser’! on the winning team at Ocelot’s Sunday Night Pub Quiz(at last)…he’s headed northweird next month for a couple of months on some mega-boat…Nazi John’s gonna hang for a while, leave and then return more quickly than usual….Californicate has lost its charm for him and maybe he’s got a love life goin’ here…good for him, I say….god knows, all the bad ones are taken..

and, according to  plan, Alabama Bob is still scheduled to arrive June 4..he needs a place to rent, btw, something  ‘cheap’….and yes, Dr J got jumped again…4 or 5am, about a week ago….dude, you’re bait at that hour, dont’cha know?

meanwhile, back at the ranch…a new pump for the fountain and my refer got defrosted..whew, the excitement of it all.there’s a tour of the Popenoe House this Thursday, 5pm…gotta go(I Do) and a Lalique glass exhibit at the Santo Domingo Museum that looks most xlnt. In the rush to get the June version of Our Man, I forgot to add the printing museum…across from the park, by  City Hall..9-4, 30q..history….and an old (1700’s) copy of Don Quixote…behind glass, of course (the sneeze shield)…so, the clouds roll in and the burning question..are there ice cubes yet?

so, if you’re still with me, go to www.amazon.com/author/michaelsherer and buy up a gross or so…’baby needs a new pair of shoes’ as they say…

yep, coming round next week, on the 31st is another celestial event of the Oriental persuasion…will there be more fireworks than usual (it that’s possible?

in what was the last picture show’ at Micho’s last night, Bobby Darling’s 8 week contract was not extended…why? certainly drew the crowds, week after week. A another restaurenteur has offered to maintain the gig elsewhere. I bailed out at the last minute, not wanting to hear another rendition of ‘Mack the Knife.’….i realized that it had bad connotatons/memories wrapped in it, from a long time ago(I dated his widow for awhile)…and thought that I’d processed all that crap.

Big changes in the in Ocelot patio….Steve Wintershaw has more or less completely redone the interior and nicely so…and a couple of the lampreys/remoras that have been lurking in the corners won’t be there much longer….even more mysterious, reports that one recently got arrested for dealing.

and some hanky-panky in the venerable Club Antigueña next to where I live….’seems that about a year ago there some some $30K…USD in the coffers….now, a few months later, with some new local administrators of he Guatemalan version, the money isn’t there…oops     and no big parties to blame it on, either…and alas, one of our local artists, banned again from a particular bar..’permanently’ I heard.

And next month’s proposed jaunt to the Rio Dulce and beyond? every day it gets a bit fragmented, depending on who wants to go, who can and who’s got transport/SS…maybe just rent a big shuttle and call it the “Metamucil Tour’…hmmm.load up(st to speak) a few hostesses(not Twinkies) and travel in style.

so, drop in at Ocelot and check out the new murals….Lava is still doing their 6-7 happy hour for 5q but I’m not impressed with the plastic glasses or the minimal pours.. and for those in need of serious ‘eye candy’ the luscious Marbel is working Fri/Saturday night at Reilly’s la Esquina. I might, just to be sure that community standards are being enforced, such as if I told her that she had a beautiful body, would she hold it against me?

lastly, monthly sales on Amazon for taking off….www.amazon.com/author/michaelsherer

where did those things go? garage sales? Ebay? somehow, Wednesday rolled around, as usual…changes coming to A-Town, whether you  like it or not….La Pena del Sol, without Bill or Mary, has re-opened….don’t expect Bill at the door or on the congas..big mistake, Paco…it won’t be the same, just like Hector’s, without Hector, won’t be the same.

Word of a new bar opening Friday! that long vacant space on the corner of 6th Ave/5th Calle…across from Los Cebollinas? supposedly three Canadians with experience…La Vibras or something like that….I got to have a tour of it…great space!….great f%$#@! location and they should suck the air outa the competition…Friday night? open bar, 6-8!… Shaun at O’lot, who is supposedly hiring the very hot Colombiana, ex-girlfriend of another restauranteur…and where’s Andrea, the Venezeulan babe?

A big Block party Saturday! Calle del Sol, up by the gas station and Santa Domingo..10-5pm…booths, stands, beer and cheer…gotta go, just to see it, I s’pose.

no Pub Crawl tonight? either that or they started late..and I had to front the $$ for a 100 covers of the latest, ‘A year of Driving Dangerously’….a new wrinkle from my local publisher…but, as they say, ‘money talks and bull shit walks’ and as I put the $800   q on the counter, he said that the wheels(presses)were already turning…Friday?  maybe…so, you waNT TO BE A writer? fuggedabout it…
