it was an inauspicious beginning…I overslept and the guard at the gate did likewise…I think the shuttle was on time….3:45 or so but I burnt my fingers/Bic lighting up the padlock with the bundle of keys in the dark…fine…0500 and thru the streets of Guatemalo, headed for Honduras and Copan…my big camera misfired and was left behind..

Copan? nicer, prettier and cleaner than I remembered(it’d been 3 years) and the women were superb…if Hillbilly Tom had been on this run, he’d woulda been shouting ‘Mamacita!’ over and over again…Twisted Tanya’s for dinner…superb…this usual crew was a bit short: Jackson bailed at the last minute and his replacement, Hogan, fit in nicely…or has he’s became to be called, Hogan Von Daniken…per his memories of seeing elephants and space men amongst the carvings…the ‘elephants’ turned out to be stylized versions of jaguars and the ‘space men?’…probably flashbacks…but that’s Hogan…

the ruins/museum was superb…we skipped the tunnels…seen one, you’ve seen ’em all…the currency conversion nightmare of dollars vs. lempira vs quetzales confounded  the ‘perfesser’ and me for 3 days…Hogan is some kinda mathematical prodigy aka an idiot savant…he ‘got it’..we didnt’…aka laydowns/pushovers for the local merchants and they’re dying…Copan runs on overflow from Antigua and as we know, there isn’t much overflow…we did manage a ‘blind taste test’ of 7 yr old Flor de Cana vs. 12 yr old…Hogan insisted…yep, my fave 7r old version won!…we killed the bottle of 12 yr old…’blind taste test’ indeed.

this week? Office Depot in Antigua!…Wed, 3rd calle/7th avenida…Laurel and Rory’s new Irish pub, the Snug’, opens Thursday, as par to Travel Menu…they kinda got bounced after the cleaning house of the Sunday afternoon slugfest-punchout at Reilly’s La Esquina a few weeks ago.

and my never ending search for proficiency in espanol continues..bought a great CD called ‘Country en Espanol..’…photo below…the Art Show at Finca Azotea?…lotta people, some old, some new, one babe and Mike Chrisman’s new book on sale..”Little Stories’….great/great poetry…the first book of poetry I’ve ever bought…go out and find it…fabulous Bloody Mary’s…good crowd, xlnt location, which spooked me, because I’d done/shot an article on indigo there, 4 years ago..and a Steve Wintershaw watercolor that I want…if I’d had the $$ but after Copan/currency/cha cha…I told him I’ll buy it after the First…of January, of course.. and then, there was the dumb ass German tourist who screwed us up crossing back into Guatemala, cost us time getting thru the City last night…

Right…let’s milk it for all its worth(assuming there is any worth)…I read today of Somali pirates…they charge for expenses on top of the ransom money…waaay cool and very business-like..and they don’t release the ship for the payment of expenses only and they average $2MilUSD per…can we hire these guys as consultants? Let them flog the health care program or Britney’s latest tour…on other fronts, Tropical Storm Fellatio is ‘lashing Hawaii’….hmm, nasty visual.

Random thoughts(so to speak)…are nuns creatures of habit? if a flower dies and then comes back, is that reincarnation?

Xaviera Hollander is coming here in February for eight days…o christ…can Antigua survive this? do any of us care?  will we make a serious dent in Rexer’s Illegal Mezcal? will she bring me hash?…o god, please…

seen on 5ta norte….a few more water-colorists, apparently taking advantage of the latest inswell of turistas…’having lived in tourist towns for the last 40 years or so, I understand the need for folks to bring money to the locals(to keep the town green, the wheels turning and so on)but…I resent the sucking up of the the bandwidth and slower internet access…I know, in a month they’re gone…take a deep breath.

One last vignette about Copan…there aren’t any shoe-shine kids begging for a buck. The local service club, Rotary, went out and bought three shoe-shine stands, Shinola and new brushes…gave classes…a big PASS….’we don’t need any stinkin’ shoe-shine boxes.’…weird shit, no?  Did they shine on the Rotary or was it just a brush-off?  did they know shit from Shinola?…obviously the ‘travel meds’ for my twisted ankle have taken hold: forgive me lord, for I have shined.

And last, as Ophelia Later would say….God’s gonna get ya…these missionaries are serious about it: I turned down a job working for the church last week: they had an opening for a missionary position but I said I was tired of that.

What is it with me, bottles of Flor de Cana and my luggage?…yet again, whilst traveling, admittedly in rough terrain in the mountains of Honduras, the bastard bottle leaked again(not the same bottle)and giving my clothes the added freshness of eau de rum…the papers in the suitcase got a bit saturated, my used underwear improved but my attitude took a dump. This is not the first instance, btw…any clues, hints or ideas greatly appreciated.

Peter Bamboo Glover….mugged or an attempt at such, down by 2nd Avenida and 9th Calle a few nights ago: I think Wendy Wever, who lives nearby, also was recently attacked, but a bit more successfully by the two bandits on a moto. Peter, who packs, didn’t shoot ’em…the next time, if there is such a thing, I suspect it will be different. I’ve lately began to occasionally pack heat, if only per the insistance of she of the infectious laugh…trouble is, the damn Beretta is too bulky for evening wear(I know, bitch, bitch)so I’m either importing my trusty Walther PPK or finding a replacement in the local market.

Copan! much more interesting than I knew…the hot springs! superb, smaller than Tabacon, less commercialized and sweet(I’m goin’ back)….add some virgins in feathers, tiki torches and the spirit of 18 Rabbit will be there.  The rest of Honduras is totally fed up with Mel and his antics….he goes to Mexico, meets with Calderon, gets the full military honors and then steps on his dick with various comments…Calderon sticks a sock in his mouth, orders him to hang out in the hangar until his plane is ready and then…’adios, idiot..’  Mel’s pals are dwindling, down to Danny O and Chavez…I suspect that the Castro Brothers have heard enough by now.

And….I finally took a wrong step in the dark last night, ambling home from Hector’s…no, I wasn’t loaded…I was just not paying attention. Twisted the ankle for the first time since moving here, but thanks to the good folks at the pharmacy who reloaded my favorite travel meds, I expect to be in the twilight zone shortly(as if I ever left it, some might say)…

I’ve been trying to upload photos of the virgins in the pools at the hot springs but thanks to all the f$%^#@! students/backpackers who are sucking up bandwidth this morning, it ain’t workin’…I guess I wait until 3am when they’re passed out/overdosed/mugged..film at 11(or 3am).

%$^*! umbrella….my ass: I’m now on Umbrella #4 for the season…I know where I left two(in the back seat of she of the infectious laugh) and they may be recoverable.

Scene and herd at Hector’s last night…Pablo Arenales, Wendy Wever and a couple other folks chowing down on pizza(pizza at Hector’s?)and his magnificent home brew beer….seriously, this is good stuff…and a new variety of french-fires, equally tasty. If he changes the house brand to this brand, I have a hunch I’m gonna be eating more than I usually leave on the plate(Leah takes care of my leftovers)….great beer!

The press conference put on by the hoteliers from Copan was good….great handouts, lotsa people there from Copan, a few from San Pedro, Tela and down the coast. Honduras’ tourism industry has take a double whammy…first the global recession and now Bullhorn Mel at the campfire. Whoever is advising him 0ught to be shot…this does not look nor sound presidential, even by Bush-standards. As long as he keeps in mind the amnesty proposals, sign off on whatever else is offered. Keep the clothes, the plane and the Miami bank accounts. Speaking of Honduras, I’m off for that happy land of no tourists on Tuesday, via Hedman-Alas…Franklin at the local office says there might be a chance of taking the 6:30 am bus rather than the 3:30 am departure as scheduled…I don’t do 3:30 am well, under any circumstances.

Sobremesa! no, its not the table at the AA meeting…Alex Farrar’s gem of place on 3ra Calle…a new collection of hand-made masks graces the walls and a new chef(I sampled their salsa de chipotle)and if that’s a hint or clue of his abilities, I’m back for dinner. They’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner…short menu but good. I’m makin’ dents in his wine assortment…

I’ve made a rash decision: ointment in my fly or a flying in the ointment. Maybe its the recent use of shuttle buses about the country(Lake Atitlan last week)….ah, who cares? its my ass…that said, there is an amazing number of shuttles running hither and thither, packed with shuttle-ees, taking up parking spaces…the town is full of unfamiliar faces, hopefully leaving money behind. A one-man delegation from Copan is arriving in a week, trying to reverse the image that Honduras is off-limits, a tourist no-no and a resort for the minions of Satan(Mel’s Hell?)…anyway, they are dying for tourists to visit($$). At some point they’re (Honduras)gonna have to do something about the narco planes that mysteriously crash(pancake)once a month, with Venezuelan registry, usually on a stretch of deserted highway…the cops come later, stand around for the photo op and wonder…’where’s the blow?’….one would think that the originating source would be running out of Cessnas by now.

Hector’s back! Leah’s birthday is today!…at 8 o’clock last night, the joint was packed….Leah’s on top of the crowd(so to speak)of 18-20 people, serving wine, making coffee, schlepping orders non-stop…in walks the unshaven, bedraggled Hector, just off the plane from NYC and he jumps in…’didn’t miss a beat..

San Pedro, the other side of the Lake? ‘other’ fairly well describes it….

A bit of confusion

A bit of confusion

Alas…poor Klara. Does ‘dazed and confused’ sound familiar?

Dude...where's my car?

Dude...where's my car?

This seems to capture the atmosphere of San Pedro…park the car(leave it for the weeds)and wander up and down the overgrown paths…I like the place: it was a different planet and no, I did not get the Mayan Head Massage….mayan head?  don’t go there…
