first of all, this is an unfounded rumor. The little Mercadito, next to the Expreso Condesa, where the back was full of the same-o same-o handicrafts: word is it’s gonna be either or KFC or an Applebee’s…with the recent invasion of a Wendy’s, a couple of doors away, WTF? is there some kind of design/license review in this town or does the mayor (outgoing) have any kind of say about this? if this is even half-way true, given the recent invasion of Dunkin’ Donuts and a Little Caesars down 4th Calle, this is fairly outrageous for the preservation of what remains of Antiguas’ cultural integrity…in Carmel, for example, where I once lived for ten years, you can’t even eat ice cream on the streets. I’m not suggesting that kind of Nazi thinking here but…

and yes, we’ve got the PNC, those lovable copies of SS storm troopers, standing on the corners in the mornings…as if they’re really ‘combating crime’ in this haven of tranquility, this tourist mecca..and why the Army troops ride with them is another mystery. ..the crime here occurs after dark, folks..and is focused on tourists/gringos..that’s where the money is, but why not do their patrols after dark and in the fringe areas of town? oops..Mr Logic just reared his ugly head again.

Speaking of logic, Caniz, that long-time private mail service that we pay extra for, for the extra service? they’ve decided to add a little to the pile: now there’s only outgoing mail on Tuesdays but on Thursdays they’re bringing in mail from the City…hmm, you ask? yeah, me too..why not go back to the outgoing mail service on that day also? the truck is here…throw in some mail, what the hell? why not? don’t ask, don’t tell/smell…

Biden’s in-country, bringing promises  of joy, strength and money, no doubt..will Guatemala ever see any of the $$? only if Portillo comes out of Zacapa and rearranges the constitution (done often here)…I like the guy: great hair, good clothes and a past that works well with the electorate here..so what if he wasted two Mexicans? that’s gotta count for something..so what if he stole a few million bucks here and there? he’s obviously a ‘go-to’ kinda guy..

OK, I’m whining…allowing a Wendy’s on the Plaza was a rape of the cultural integrity of Antigua: I’m not against ‘fast foods’ as long as they’re down the block and out of sight…if and a big IF, a KFC or an Applebees goes in next door, its the beginning of the end of Antigua as something special, a cultural treasure or a UNESCO World Heritage place where we live…it’s bad enough with all the ice cream stores, bars, restaurants..not to mention travel agencies…I’m not…they gotta make a living..I don’t but I can see their place in the scheme of things.

Blender-Rama? daiquiries…just enough to make this possible nightmare fade for a while.+

La Taverna mildly jammed, with some of the ‘unindicted co-conspirators’…even John aka Nazi Adams was there, just having flown in from NorCal….he’s 98% here, for good/bad or whatever…Mike d aka the ‘Perfesser’ due in next week…8th? they will both hang out at the Ponzi Bob chateau for a while (and yes, the Vortex People have left)…PB due in later in the year, wife and friends in January, just in time for another stab at promoting the virtues of gold in/around the  Motagua…

Bobby D, rockin’ the Snug! almost a capacity crowd…doesn’t take much per the size…and no, no ‘soft opening’ for the Edge Inn (Spiros/Alabama Bobs)deal with what was the Calle in the Nido Antigua…’talking about some remodeling to the bar…yikes! I liked as it was, and then opening mid next week, +/-….town packed with chapins aka Guatemaltecos…why? dunno…sidewalks jammed…

ran into two of my favorite people, GG Foto and Chocolate Bob…she’s headed for the States soon but is getting the Land Cruiser fixed (carburetor +)and wants to do road trips…he was passing out new samples of the latest chocolate creations (and his chocolate is my  personal fave).

and yes, no evening would  be perfect without passing by the Casbahs little downstairs bar…four bar people but the one I prefer…yeah…Marbel the Delicious…a visual delight and yes, we’ll be ‘doing dinner soon’….after next weeks voyage of the damned, aka ‘back to Salami’…or hide the salami, take your pick..it’s me, JR and the ‘ captain’….with a plan, maps and rum/$$…what could go wrong?

some are faster than others, especially if you’re trying to swat ’em…and no, I haven’t been by La Calle to see how Spiros and Alabama Bob are making it work. It’s kind of an unlikely duo, almost an ‘Odd Couple’ thing but who knows?

and yes, the annual migration of incoming/outgoing folks continues…the ‘Perfesser’ and Nazi John will be in town shortly…James Mullen  probably here for another week and I guess that Tanya H is or is about to pull the plug on Antigua for good. There’s a great newish FB page for Antigua Classified and Antigua Ex-Pats that’s getting a lot of traffic…I like ’em both, btw.

Piano Mike, sometimes aka Guitar Mike, is doing four gigs a week now…two with Bobby Darling, and two solo, either Travel Menu or Hops and Tails (the old El Muro)out on 3rd calle oriente.

And another long time Antigua bar goes City! aka Reilly’s, Luna Miel and Mono Loco, La Sala is opening a City bar…no, not titty bar…City bar!

And a definite…well, maybe definite ‘good bye’ to Carla Berryhill…from the snake/tarantula infested swamps of Rio Dulce to an Irish bar in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia! that girl does get around…here’s wishing her luck..

and yes…finally…out of town last week…4 days in/around Zacapa..and I only saw one drug lord and that was in a supermarket. The ‘Plan’ was to go look for amethyst and tourmaline deposits…the first got turned down and the second was subject to a breakdown of the Jeep, way up high in the Sierra de las Minas. Yeah, thanks to a lot of luck and a bottle of rum, we got out.  And returned the next day, bouncing our way up/down what might have been a road here and there…my kidneys took a shot, I’m sure. A big tip of the Panama to J.R and his magnificent Jeep…tricked out, raised, wide tires and so on…couldn’t have made it without him and or the ‘captain’….and I heard a LOT of Antigua/Gaute history on people and places here…I hadn’t known that he moved to Guatemala in 1950, por ejemplo…and, of course that info was subject to a ‘news blackout’ since I promised not to write or talk about most of it. Visualize ‘los tres monos’ and there you have it..and the Marvelous Marbel? last seen working weekends at Casbah’s little downstairs bar and as always, looking great.

even by Antigua ‘standards’ there weren’t any of the ‘unindicted co-conspirators’ at La Taverna for the usual Friday night gathering…hmm? Dr J was there, James Mullen stopped by to add some content but I left, to go across the street and talk with the lovely Mayra of Mamma’s…and in the doorway of Fusion, along with Alex? you know, his  cantina in back? La Calle? drum roll…it’s being taken over by Spiros and….Alabama Bob!  I’ve always liked the look of La Calle and this might well be a ‘game changer’ for Nido Antigua…the short-lived ‘Backyard Bar and Grill’ departed a while ago (who knew or bothered to check?) and per Spiros, he’ll be doing some occasional cooking back there…AB is kinda dazed, considering being of the other side of a bar, for a change.

and so, it’s the beginning of the end…today, tomorrow and monday for the annual craziness of  Independence Day in Antigua…the parades, the drums, the parades and the costumes. I figure that by Monday everyone who can walk will have marched in at least one parade. Yeah, it’s a spectacle and a free one, so every villager from miles around comes to town. If you haven’t seen a baton-twirling majorette in go-go boots, this is your chance. I’m waiting for the older ones to do t heir stuff(struts, you know)….the parades tend to screw up the traffic patterns, so if you’re driving/walking, etc..

on the way home last night, I passed Casbah’s lower bar, which had a bevy (4) of babes working the bar…yeah, one was the always delectible Marbel…she is such a ‘package’….I would’ve stopped for a ‘final final’ but I’d already been to the well more than usual.

nd yes, it appears that the Captain and I are finally getting to Zacapa and beyond next Tuesday…and being driven by one of the more lesser seen ‘unindicted co-conspirators’…the phrase ‘strange brew’ coames to mind but will be interesting, one way or the other. I’m a little concerned about our lodgings in Z-town…the captain had previously said that he had a friend with a finca nearby, etc..but when pressed to describe its proximity/location on a map…uh…and yes, he’s been there before…this will sort itself out by Tuesday, I’m assuming.

ever hear of ‘cascade failure?’…tis where when one system (automotive, computer or plumbing)gets upgraded…like the new pump in the fountain that caused the older pvc joints to go out, the recent upgrades to my plumbing system on the finca brought a series of ‘breakdowns’, like the faucets in the bathroom…’having been a slum lord in a previous life, I offered to ‘do it myself’, assuming that they were tools to be had…as if…but, a few days later, Joaquin the older guy  with the shotgun at night, brought me a rusty 8 inch crescent wrench (with pride, mind you) yeah, I barked the knuckles and the faucets weren’t fixable but all is well and I’m ‘flushed with pride.’

why were there three PNC (cops) parked outside Casbah last night, about ten? somebody get refused admission? a shakedown? didn’t see any AK-47’s or such being waved around…the town, last night? Fusion/Mamma’s? empty…Micho’s kinda medium packed, B5 doing a giant party of 25 or so (smiles on the waiter’s faces), El Cazadore Italiano doing SRO, no seats/tables, Luciano fuming in the kitchen but cranking the dishes out the door..

thanks to Rich O, I got the explanation for the massive hordes flocking into Ocelot/Lava…tis the end of the spanish school/volunteer cycle, the girls are going back to school in the You Ess of A soon and they’re having one last fling or two or three..the blondes who have found(or been found)by their latin lovers, aka tutors, will have to say goodbye…the LL’s will have to face the fack…fack? ‘fact that they’re not going along, not getting a green card and…o well, love…

the short-lived Pit Stop experiment is changing/morphing into a new kinda Lava outreach station for families/kids, with a burger and hot dog menu…maybe a play area, unlike the wild after hours parties that were so wild , if only for a while…yeah, that was me last night,in the Ocelot having a pink faggot cosmopolitan…

Peter the G! aka Glover, shepherding a newly (same day)arrival of real estate clients thru the maze of Bodegona, thru the pillow sections and so forth…a full service’ kinda real estate agent, not like the rest of the lazy pack in this town….reports of the Marvelous Marbel, working at Reilly’s La Esquina…nope, I haven’t seen her but….and the September version of Our Man in Antigua posted on amazon.com this morning…lotta changes…and no, the long-promised local edition of ‘A Year of Driving Dangerously’ isn’t out…%$#@! local printer…

for all, whether you need it or not…can it hurt? Coming this Monday, the 15th, just in time to moan about filing your US tax return, the 3rd anniversary of Ocelot….5-6pm, open bar…well, not quite but the lower end stuff is free…perfect timing since a lot of the more….uh, ‘serious drinkers’ have left for the States.

top this! or send in your own experiences with the maid hiding stuff…I thought it was just me/mine but Mike Chrisman has a story about a set of salvaged wine corks being used in a game….and where did she put them? in the oven….I feel a little bit better, but if you can top it, do so..no rewards other than mutual WTF’s…

speaking of WTF, I met a relative tonight, who  is the Editor for a publication in El Salvador, called WTF…’Waves, Tours, Fiestas’….a relative, here? distant but her name is Kelli Hatfield..it’s a new publication and a guide book…I like it…www.wtf-elsalvador.com and yes, I’m a distant Hatfield cousin, which might explain my predilection for guns/whisky..

Imageand there you have it…ah, the smell of gun powder in the morning.

Segafreddi, the new nightclub upstairs where the theatre was, by Mono Loco?  open..a bit on the cavernous side, huge movie screen, nice bar, dance floor and upper level to watch…Wok Co, my favorite chinese joint, packed..

Bobby Darling/Moriah Sterling, setting up at Caffe Bourbon, Rumi(i finally went in)looks fine…Neils’ ‘Gastro Pub doing fine, Nido Antigua empty….lotta spaces vacant: guess that Semana Santa didn’t quite pan out as expected. The old Reilly’s location on  upper 5th still undergoing renovations…been said that they’ll have some apartments up,  and commercial spaces down..it’s only been two years plus since they started, eh?

and last but not least, the Miracle! Frener, my printer….the local version? produced, for the first time, perfect editions…no typos, missing pages, screw-ups and ….on time…I think its time for another adult sports beverage…

apropos of nothing, of course…the seemingly never-ending story of the “Land Rover” in the muck took another twist today….it seems that it really belongs (sort of)to Mac and Jim Hearne except that they never really had a title to it.. .so? so what? anyone with a printer/scanner and a decent graphics program can get around this issue..more or less…my suggestion to Reid is to put it on pontoons and float it to Puerto Barrios…right, as it…he’s getting very cold feet about this deal.

Francisco, one of our resident ‘dealers’ in hot/dubious merchandise of uncertain provenance (I’m being kind)working the patio at Ocelot…the jade mask? for you…500q..

the latest roadtrip….http://www.examiner.com/article/the-search-for-monument-21?cid=db_articles

what was the Restaurant Panchoy is reincarnating as the Cafe Panchoy…a big space on 6th ave, and installing a lot of new wooden fixtures…what was Ixcot has a new tenant, slowly moving in. A menu, business plan and a license? who knows…maybe they’ll call iit…”Mama Town”….and thanks, Christian for the ‘ thumbs up’ on the little Skyy Cosmo cocktails at Bodogona…yep, add a little extra Vitamin V and they crank/rock…whatever..

and a early Happy Birthday to the Marvelous Miss M….how old is she gonna be? I know, but some gentlemen don’t tell..HBT’s 69th rolls around(nice visual)on Sunday…Guanajar will rock..fireworks, guns in the night, the usual stuff..I’m definitely packin’ and I don’t mean a suitcase…if half the stories I’ve heard are any indication, a man would be a fool not to.

If you read a lotta books (and I do) consider joining the American Legion Library, up 7th avenida next to the Bavarian Garden…open to anyone with 100q (a year’s subsciption), 11-3, 7 days a week…over 30000 books of every kind: I’d be spending a 100q a week otherwise, buying used books.

Bobby Darling and Moriah playing at Cafe Bourbon tonight…Mike C and lady there on time for the start..the rest of the eateries in town fairly empty but given the hordes of clean/white kids streaming into town, they gotta eat somewhere(maybe)

gun control? use both hands…
