even by Antigua ‘standards’ there weren’t any of the ‘unindicted co-conspirators’ at La Taverna for the usual Friday night gathering…hmm? Dr J was there, James Mullen stopped by to add some content but I left, to go across the street and talk with the lovely Mayra of Mamma’s…and in the doorway of Fusion, along with Alex? you know, his  cantina in back? La Calle? drum roll…it’s being taken over by Spiros and….Alabama Bob!  I’ve always liked the look of La Calle and this might well be a ‘game changer’ for Nido Antigua…the short-lived ‘Backyard Bar and Grill’ departed a while ago (who knew or bothered to check?) and per Spiros, he’ll be doing some occasional cooking back there…AB is kinda dazed, considering being of the other side of a bar, for a change.

and so, it’s the beginning of the end…today, tomorrow and monday for the annual craziness of  Independence Day in Antigua…the parades, the drums, the parades and the costumes. I figure that by Monday everyone who can walk will have marched in at least one parade. Yeah, it’s a spectacle and a free one, so every villager from miles around comes to town. If you haven’t seen a baton-twirling majorette in go-go boots, this is your chance. I’m waiting for the older ones to do t heir stuff(struts, you know)….the parades tend to screw up the traffic patterns, so if you’re driving/walking, etc..

on the way home last night, I passed Casbah’s lower bar, which had a bevy (4) of babes working the bar…yeah, one was the always delectible Marbel…she is such a ‘package’….I would’ve stopped for a ‘final final’ but I’d already been to the well more than usual.

nd yes, it appears that the Captain and I are finally getting to Zacapa and beyond next Tuesday…and being driven by one of the more lesser seen ‘unindicted co-conspirators’…the phrase ‘strange brew’ coames to mind but will be interesting, one way or the other. I’m a little concerned about our lodgings in Z-town…the captain had previously said that he had a friend with a finca nearby, etc..but when pressed to describe its proximity/location on a map…uh…and yes, he’s been there before…this will sort itself out by Tuesday, I’m assuming.

thank you, yet again, Jim O, for some great Antigua history. “Valley of the Dolls’, etc. Two Stroke Dave, later revised to Rolex Dave,  ultimately met his demise in El Salvador. This town has so many fascinating chapters/characters, that every day is chock fulla laughs..”Bull Durham’ another book of stories/adventures, same Reid C…and, of course the inimitable H.B.T, who never runs out of stories…like his current ‘situation’ which I’m not going into…we may, depending on some variables, be traveling to Zacapa next weekend…I have no idea how he and the ‘captain’ will mesh/get along, as they’re polar opposites but that’s yet to be seen.

so, another notch added to the ’86’d from that place/this place..it’s hard to keep track of the individuals who reach this pinnacle of bad behavior but fortunately there’s only a few players of this caliber. If you’re a habitue or frequent flier in the bar scene here, you’ll recognize the signs…regular binges and the usual warning signs of angry outbursts, serious intoxication and then just ol falling down drunk and disorderly behavior.

Music? you want music? got it…last night at Travel Menu, Bobby Darling opened for Piano Mike and Andy Luna…tonight, Piano Mike and his alter ego, Guitar Mike play at Hops and Tails, the old El Muro place on 3rd Calle. Travel Menu? their remod, I think, is great…food, equally so..that’s a hot location for some, not others…that side of 6th calle is basically bar to bar, like Punto Zero, staring at La Sala/Reilly’s across the street…how many bars are there in that end of town? How does Mitos or Segafreddy’s keep going? what’s up/not up with the old Sangre on upper 5th? its mucking afazing to me..

the ever glorious Tanya Hughes returns tomorrow…Nazi John not far behind and where the hell is Hogan Von Daniken? Next week, the 4th, is the one year anniversary of La Taverna…still hanging on, thanks at least to Dave the Slave..the main reason is their relaxed/non existent enforcement of the ‘no smoking’ law..if it weren’t for that..who knows?

so…Labor Day? yeah, Monday, at least in the You Ess of A, which from here appears to be more f….ed than ever…if you read/watch the news, it’s one sad screw-up after another: Fox News is no better than a cartoon network for dummies, no? and I think that we’re all on the same page as the latest Monsanto ‘cram downs’ for here and El Salvador…even Vietnam, defoliated by Agent Orange, rolled over..’those who don’t remember history, etc..’the mind reels…I think I’ll take my medicine early (Flor de Cana) and  space out…have a great weekend!

guess who’s back? Pat F…..g Farrell!…been gone almost a year and shows up? yep…welcome back…he mentioned visiting Don Marco in  the pen…remember that FBI bust in the park? Don M gets out in September but he’s restricted from traveling for two years, but as I said..’hey, he’s got his brother’s passport, eh?’…and yes, the PNC in action last night! caught a 16 yr old perp(the other 6 got away)trying to crack into Gaia..upper 5th, ok? if they were and the cops think so, this is/was the gang responsible for the 11 or so break-ins around town recently…bypassing alarms, eh?  hmm..who used to work for an alarm installation company?

the ex-restaurant Panchoy on 6th ave sur, by dos Reilly’s? major renovations…its a big  place and going up against Las Cebollinas? no  worries from the better place, Da Vinci (my favorite per decor) who is going the ‘pizza-pizza route’…why? a class joint? I guess pizza is better than nothing..same could be said about Christophe but I’m not going there..and another shop opening next to dos Reilly’s..what? who knows? probably a travel agency/spanish school/pizza/mayan crafts…getcher t-shirts here, altho I see that more than one clothing store is going the ‘50% off’ route…

the very elegant Catherine D, dining alone at El Sabor Tiempo…when she mentioned rabbit stew I had to mention ‘Thumper’…I left before she threw her wine at me..and yes, the March issue of Our Man is up on Amazon.com….getcher Christmas shopping done early (I need the $$)a few more outlets in town and thanks to the recent influx of tourists it’s moving…thank god..where’s the Flor of Dasha? haven’t seen her on the streets nor seen any sign that she’s opened a new store…damn..she is  a ‘visual treat’…my Flor? on the counter, waiting for a refill…have a great Thursday, the end of February and so on..

the rain…drizzle drizzle…kept me in(and probably just as well, you say)..however the Bacardi Anejo and espresso kinda make up for it.

Walter Fischer and his partners, who picked up Juan Carlos’ defunct Antigua Bus Tour, have repainted the bus(his says they’re adding another 3) and…so on and so on..the bus is being seen driven around town, which is a start.

And you thought that times are hard? my favorite newspaper vendor is selling off her personal jewelry…lotta silver, some gold

So? the 2nd or 3rd Festival de Maiz (Corn Fest) that I’ve been to…I ran into an ex-INGUAT official who didn’t know anything about it…I asked an Antigua-born guide about it..zip, nada..for people who are in the tourism business, one would assume, etc.

news from our wandering troubador, Nelson Lunding..he’s way up on the northern california coast, in places that few of us have ever been to, much less heard of..#1..point Arena? #2 Gualala?..I know ’em both..big deal, right? WTF in either case..too far south to pick up any of the Emerald Triangle aka dope biz from Humboldt..who knows?

the ‘Perfessor aka Mike Donley, checking in from the Pacific northwest…says he’s ‘sold’ his boat’…o please, God…the two happiest days for a boat owner are the day they buy it and the day they sell it..s’posed to be back in A-Town around the end of October and a good thing…at least two ‘professional women’ have confused the two of us…as being the one and same…since my hands are clean, my conscience clear, it’s gotta be him..

final thoughts on a rainy Friday night and a conversation with a pub owner re: nightlife..the Three Aces in Hyderabad, Athens/Mykonos, the Bulldog/Amsterdam, El Gato Tueto/Havana, Lips/San Salvador, Hotel Del Rey/San Jose, Club Exotic/Reykejvik, The Library, ‘Vegas, (fuggedabout Crazyhorse II), Patpong Street, Bangkok, Copa de Oro, Juarez and for local color, Club Exceso in Xela..Antigua well never catch up or come back to what it might once have been: get over it. The Beige Patrol runs it.

Weird Rumor #7….the top level of the Casbah changing…

Riki’s dark, and what was Pangea, thence the Lounge, the Bud Bar and Braulios? reincarnating (nope, not coming back as a flower) into a combo pizza and sushi place..Edy’s out(and he’s happy) Alex and Sobremesa and Shaun of Ocelot proudly, and rightfully so, displaying their 2012 5 stars of excellence from Trip Advisor…now if only TA would pull the La Esquina listing(and a few other departeds in town).

the new ‘up scale’..why do I use this dumb phrase? the deli that opened in the old Deliciosa space? aimed at furriners with $$$ per Jim D…I was gonna take a look but got side-tracked by Jason of Lava and his oak barrels…’here, try this…have another…taste the oak’? rum, whisky and tequila, yes…drew the imaginary line at mezcal, I did…and missed the new deli…they closed at 6 or so.

So…tomorrow night, 8ish…Angie Angies for Nelson’s final final here before taking off for the States(back in Octo, he says)…Wayne Hooper, Adan and Willie Gomez plus Nelson and we(M/I) ate at Wokco again, next to a spiffed up La Sala…’didn’t leave any food this time and I like the place…atmosphere, decor and good  fresh Chink grub…so sorry..no racism on Friday…suppose I said that they have a different slant on things? slant…ok, fine…you’re on your own now.

‘think the one in the middle is the High Princess
