nope…today’s El Periodico noting that the cops  nailed another Zeta and that the authorities are searching for Walter Horse Overdick, el capo del narcotrafico up in the hills…no, Horst…Horse? insult to injury or grounds for slander…in case you wondered, o’Dick has a more fearsome moniker…El Tigre…he’s probably armed and dangerous.

‘saw a local big guy in his birthday suit last night, at the Venetian Masked Ball…The Big U, whose birthday party was held at San Jose El Viejo in June of ’09..drum roll: he wore the same outfit last night as he wore for his birthday…the King of Prussia suit…hey, get mileage  outa these outfits…not only do I still have the long black velvet cape/cloak but now I have a tasty brown wig, with ringlets/curls…and a damned good thing i real the small print on the hair dye package…’permanente’….screw that..brown shoepolish for the  ‘stache and beard..the mask? not sure what/where it’ll be appropriate but that’s never been my middle name anyway..

and i did get home in time to partake of the last of the curry dinner here on the ranch…damned good stuff..a few locals here, lapping up the wine and the Jim Beam Black that J finally pulled outa the cabinet..because i was a good boy, cleaned my plate and finished the wine, i gotta splash..and i wonder why i was hungover this morning?

the VMB? lotta new faces, some  old…it was a production, with trumpets, strumpets and crumpets…well, buffalo wings, ok? ‘looked to me to be about the same # as last year, altho many of the older gringo antiguenos had other plans(places to go)..

a new place to go? someone/something is moving into the old Deliciosa spot on 3rd calle…saw stainless steel stuff..tables and such…

ah…my first Gautemalan/Catholic wedding today…started on time at noon and was still going strong at 1:30 or so…gotta have those photo ops..i ditched the reception: the bloody mary at Angies pre ceremony only took care of the more immediate whim-whams..it was a helluva production in the San Francisco church (hermano wierd brother pedro’s place)..music, flowers, singer..Rita showed up in a green Model A Ford convertible and looked terrrific…but the priest? gotta give him points for remembering all his lines but…it went on and on..and on..no mas por me, por favor: i could be a bit  jaded, having said ‘I do” four times…and ‘adios’ 4X…well, more than that, if you include the various ladies here and there..

and Bodegona? WTF? outta limes for the 2nd day inna row? and I’m outa time on the TIGO and there’s voicemail waiting, i’m in the ranch and not going out until tomorrow?…hey, i’ve got charcoal and two of Bull’s famous porkchops to worry about first…if you see Bull with a dreamy smile, there’s a story but I’m not going there…ask him…tis a beautiful afternoon..got the shorts on for the first time: no, not my underwear…shorts…over the underwear..speaking of…Miss E…no, can’t go there either as she’d whup me upside the head the next time she sees me…hmm, might be ‘fun’…red light, green light stuff..

you tell me what they plan...

so…the someone of the city went around last night, distributing notices of the new ordinances that they might enforce…some people got ’em, some didn’t so it makes one wonder(yet again) how selective the process is, was or might be..the 10pm closing probably will take effect, with the threat of no alcohol sales held back, as a hammer to threaten with…the noise factor is primarily on 5ta norte and if I lived across from Los Arcos when Ignacio was playing, I wouldn’t have to leave my house to hear him…Cashbar and Reilly’s are pale by comparison, except for the crowds in the street but since they block off the streets so people can walk, WTF? catch-22 all over again…Hector and Nelson playing at JP’s…La Esquina! how the hell did I miss their new stage?

esquina's new stage

there was a play going on tonight…titled ‘mota’….or up in smoke..but the concept of knocking out the back wall and seating 50 plus…brilliant! less than brilliant are the two new restaurants going in next to Ocelot…Pangaea…get your papers in order before….get your official papers from the office across the street, who are already asking WTF with these gringos?  the french connection…they’re digging up the floor, walls….

fools rush in

bad enough to try a french theme, even worse to be absentee owners….but, hey…it ain’t my problem or my money…just what Antigua needs…more restaurants….I haven’t found any Illegal Mezcal but I did find a favorite wine…Coppola’s Diamond Series…claret, even…nope, not telling…yet..the town’s rockin’…fireworks, bridal photos in the street, people strolling…should someone tell them that marriage is like a bath? after a while, its not so hot? Cargo Room, empty at 7:30 but that’s typical…I don’t think Lex gets out of bed until 5pm…for a guy that’s 44-45, he’s looking good..almost Dorian Gray kinda stuff…John of El Muro, early 30’s…go figure, go compare…or don’t…WTF..ah…the Mime Index!…sidewalk to sidewalk…big crowd…antigua’s fine this weekend…folks…those of you who rent the street level rooms in local hotels…close your windows unless  you like flashing or have something to share: almost makes me wish I had one of those old SpeedGraphic cameras, with the flash bulb that you had to lick first, right before you shout…’gotcha!”  Alex of Sobremesa is planning an art auction for some charity…this may be my chance to score another work of his…yeah, another nude…i’m sick, but you knew that.

halloween, guatemalan-style, is slowly creeping its way here…yes, the Posado Don Carlos has their decorations up and as of yesterday, the Casbah on 5t here in Antigua had posters up…

what? no guns or drugs?

what? no guns or drugs?

somehow, it won’t feel the same without guns or drugs on Halloween…to hell with the gorras, whatever those are and if I can’t wear my sombrero, I ain’t goin’ anyway…

the latest TACA uniform has me thinking of flying them soon…maybe on the return leg from El Salvador…

definitely first class

definitely first class

and last and perhaps least…you know that I’ve been swilling California wine for decades/eras/eons…the move to Guatemala last year has had its moments and getting used to the lack of my favorite Sonoma/Napa vintages has been trying…yes, I’ve found a few bottles here and there, but they’re usually ‘corked’  or somehow affected by the move/shipping. The transition to Argentinian and Chilean brands has been one of constant trial and error, sipping and spitting, daring and swearing, like the Mondavi Cab I paid $50 for and threw out…however, those days are behind me…

The last two bottles in town, at least until Thursday

The last two bottles in town, at least until Thursday

Ho Ho Honduras…Mel, you cowboy…hanging out in the Brazilian embassy and issuing ultimatums..as if anyone outside your circle of bums is listening…last week, he said things were to be settled by Monday(and this is Sunday)….stamp your cowboy boots, tweak the Joe Stalin mustache and go back to Nicaragua….or Venezuela and supervise the loading and transport of the marching powder flights into Honduras..get something done: you’re losing market share and credibility…dude.

Not the torch for the Special Oympics

Not the torch for the Special Oympics

It kinda looks like it could be: the town is full, the bands are tuning up and if the rains don’t dampen things, the pipe mortars will start soon. I finally saw the contraption the other day….a 2 ft section of what appeared to be 4 inch metal pipe on a stand. The fireworks dude drops in the charge, which has a five foot fuse and then waits for the signal to light it off. …crack-a-boom, a  blaze of initial powder ignition and the sucker goes straight up for three hundred foot and blows up: a sizeable cloud of dirty grey/brown smoke, a very loud BANG and that’s it, folks….its not about the beauty or the art: its all about the BANG.  I’m starting to get it about how things work here. If only I could figure out the women.

There may be news of a minor miracle on the wine front:  I stumbled across a ’97 Merlot out of Haywood Vineyards in Sonoma for ten bucks….hmm…WTF?  The semi-bad news is that the cork was on the verge of disintegrating. I drank most of it and consigned the remainder to the spaghetti that’s on the stove. For the sake of science, my fund of knowledge and never-ending quest for truth, justice and a decent bottle of red, I”ll have to go back and sample another bottle. Film at eleven…

I’m a bit early with this, since the actual day isn’t until Tuesday, the 15th: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica all share the same date of liberation from the evil clutches of Spain…after a few centuries of the Inquisition, slave labor and bad wine, who could blame them? Oddly enough…maybe not all that odd, is that Mexico celebrates a day later: manana in action, a day late and a few pesos short.

There is the possibility, probably slim, that a new type of motorized passenger conveyance may be seen on the streets of Antigua….

The Beast from India

The Beast from India

Its a bit ugly and bigger than the standard tuk-tuk: rather than a little motorcycle engine, its got a liliputian one-cylinder diesel huffer and puffer…the mayor has been heard to say that he wants to get rid of the tuk-tuks…screw…what happens to us on the streets who get caught in the rain or have too much stuff in the bag to take home?  When’s the next election?

Die, Triscuits!  at $8USD a box, these imported snack foods are heavily(60%)taxed by Guatemalan Customs….por que? are they protecting us from ourselves, while we’re not smoking in public nor riding tandem on a motorscooter while talking on a cell-phone?

Saved from a death worse than fate

Saved from a death worse than fate

The rocky path of science and the thirst for knowledge was momentarily thrown off course last night, while doing research in the field. While road-testing other batches of John Rexer’s Ilegal Mezcal at La Esquina(for quality control), the luscious Lou was reading and making up new cocktails… a decent mojito and then some kind of cream/rum concoction, followed by blackberry liqueur( and I also refused the Kahlua/Amaretto shot)…the mezcal worked with the cream/rum thing, btw…

Another laboratory

Another laboratory

and another stop by the newly re-opened Cafe 2000…this feels like someone’s wet dream of “I wanna have my own sports bar.”…and a restaurant and 4 big plasma screens with obscure games playing and my own remote switch(Elvis once said that a .22 pistol makes a great remote control but you can only use it once.)…too many wait-staff, a kitchen that is wasted on breakfast, lunch and dinner for non-existent clients. When will people learn that a full service kitchen is a waste of time, money and food in a sports bar? The money is in the liquor(it doesn’t spoil, you don’t have to worry about prepping it nor do you have to wash dishes)…hey…not my problem, just making observations….get yourself some micro-waveable pizzas or work out a deal with a pizza joint around the corner…McD’s makes deliveries…go with your clientele’s tastes(or lack thereof)…

Butt-Man was kind of on patrol last night, making rounds to see who’s been naughty and who’s been nice(can you still smoke here?)…not an exhaustive survey but La Esquina and Da Vinci are thumbing their noses at the Tobacco Police…if you’re not wearing a badge, Claudia will buzz you in(I wish)

The smokin' Claudia

The smokin' Claudia

Hector was at the helm last night and in attendence his lady friend from NYC, recently imported…they make a great couple..the sweet Keri Payton also in attendence and Leah’s on top of things….later tonight: wine tasting at a location yet to be revealed.
